Speed of Light - Describes how the speed of light was measured. Calvin is the Speed of Light for Halloween. We just love how inventive our little guys are. It is amazing that there is actually a website that explains it. Did you know the speed of light changes depending on what it is moving through. BTW, it is exactly 299,792,458 meter per second.

Welcome to Historic Aviation.com -- Books, Videos, Art, Models, Kits, Calendars, Software. Another site with lots of plastic models.

Revell of Germany B-2 STEALTH BOMBER 1:144 RMG-4070. Alex wants a model of an airplane for his birthday. At least that is a suggestion from Connie. Here are some. Also, you need to search for plastic model kits on goolge.com to find more.

Well, it is late on Wednesday, another fun day. The kids made a great gift for mom. I sure hope she likes it. I haven't bought anything yet. Wish me luck that I'll find something nice!

Mom tore her Achilles tendon over the weekend, making Dad instant "Mr. Mom." Wow, Connie's says I don't appreciate her, but after just a week of this, I have to say, I think I do :-) It is hard work taking care of her, making the lunches, doing the dinners, making sure everyone gets to bed, etc. Will be an interesting two months as we adjust to this. On the other hand, it is great to be #1 around here and also be able to make whatever dishes I want. (Here comes, my favorite, plain noodles, with just a little salt and extra virgin olive oil...yummm!)

Thank goodness for my parents too. The kids have been just great about. Grace take such good care as does Alex. The hardest part is the vening because they know that Connie is there, but she can't come and give them a hug.

On the other hand, this is the true embodiment of Connie's motto, "What's the point of being married if you're not treated like a princess."

September 11th Memorial. An interesting day for the kids to say the least. Alex told me that he was watching TV and it took 15 minutes for all the names of the people who died on September 11th to scroll through. He thought that was funny. I asked him how many people died, he said over 3,000. I asked him if that was a lot. He said, well, we are just five in our family, so it must be. It's hard I think when you're young to realize how many people it must be. I'm glad we talked about it.

For Calvin and Grace, I think they are really too young to realize what it means. I tihnk they feel that people are sad. Connie is really great about this, she talks about how people feel. I want to talk about things, but I think she is right to talk about what it feels like. I asked Calvin what it felt like, he said, simply, "it's sad."

Rich got to take Alex and Grace around while Calvin had his "extra" tooth extracted. Gave me great appreciation for how hard Connie's job is. Just getting folks on time to school was hard enough. It is amazing how short the school day can seem. Lots more happens in an office job. For instance, I spent an hour getting a spoon over to Alex because I forgot to pack it in his lunch. Kudos to caregivers and parents every where.

UCDS Transformation. Wow, watch what the school is doing with this webcam. What a great idea for kids and others to see what it happening everyday! Alex is really excited to see what will happen next :-)

The last week of August, Rich takes off to have special time with the kids. It's a great week and here's what we did:

Meteorology and Climatology During an average hurricane season, six hurricanes and four tropical storms form per year, with at least two hurricanes striking the U.S. each year. Interestingly, 1998 saw the most hurricanes in almost 100 years. At one time in 1998, four hurricanes existed in the Atlantic, something that had not happened since 1883! This is for Calvin's final report in his class. He just loves to learn about hurricanes

TPC NHC TROPICAL CYCLONE NAMES. This is the set list of hurricane names. We had no idea they were set years in advance.

How fast do hurricanes move Typically, a hurricane's forward speed averages around 15-20 mph. However, some hurricanes stall, often causing devastatingly heavy rain. Others can accelerate to more than 60 mph.

Hurricane Gordon took 8 days to go from Mexico to the United States. One of the research questions Calvin asked about.

1997 Hurricanes and Typhoons This is for Calvin's project.

Hurricane images are from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS). DMSP operates day/night and dusk/dawn satellites. Daytime images are taken with sunlight striking perpendicular to the storm while dusk/dawn images have sunlight glancing across the top of the storm. Images from F12 and F14 are daytime images; those from the F13 satellite are dawn/dusk. Each hurricane is shown in two separate images showing views in the OLS visible near-infrared band and the OLS thermal-infrared band. The spatial resolution of the imagery used is 2.7 km. The thermal infrared images show the temperatures of the cloud tops, and ocean and land surfaces, while the visible-near infrared images show reflected sunlight during the day and reflected moonlight or man-made lights during the night.

Alex. What a great guy today. It was chess time and he was late, but he's such a great guy. Waited patiently until 4:40PM for Mary to pick him up. I read to him today instead of telling him a story. He's reading huge books. This one is called Annie the Moose.
Calvin. An adorable guy, he was super tired today and threw a major tandrum. I can't lift him up, so it was hard to get him out from dinner. Amazing how he quiets down later. Main issue is when does he get to pick something.
Grace. Smarter every day, today, we read several books twice. Went down easy and Dad and Grace had special time in the bath before the boys showed up. Just love the 1:1 time with each one.

Here's to never forgetting

I was recently hit by a truck while riding my bike from work. Nothing reminds you of how short life is until something like that happens. Here's to taking notes every day about what the kids and Connie have done and what I've learned.
